Comment from reddit regarding popping noise: "It could be a dirty record/playback switch. The real way to fix it is it open it up and spray contact cleaner into the switch, but an easy way is to put in a blank tape and then repeatedly press Record, then Stop, then Record, then Stop, etc., a bunch of times. Then try playing a tape again and see if the noise is gone.". Many comments responded and said that fixed it.
